£1 billion on route for UK roads
Geoff Hoon Announces Investment

- Investment in our Motorways
Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon has announced that an additional £1bn is to be invested in major transport projects next year. The recent pre-budget report accounts for £700m (one of the many fiscal stimuli suggested).
A further £300m will be made available by the government to target the “bottlenecks” on our motorways and other major roads. Congestion is the obvious target of the expenditure but safety is also a consideration.
Vansdirect of course welcomes any investment in the UK road network - anything that helps our customers safely go about their business and use the tools we supply them has got to be a good thing. If applied correctly, we in the Vansdirect news office, can only presume that positive environmental impacts will also be made - less congestion equals fewer idling cars producing needless quantities of CO2.
According to Fleetnews, the road works announced include:
- Introducing hard-shoulder running on around 500 lane miles
- Providing a new fast link between the A1 and M1 by dualling the missing section of A46 from Newark to Widmerpool
- A new road link between Manchester Airport and the A6 to the east.
- Up to £60m on introducing new traffic management measures along 54 miles of the A12
- Up to £30m to help improve access on the A160/A180 to Immingham Port on the River Humber.
