These 2 new additions to the Ford Van family are unlikely to become favourites, but do offer a low budget solution to companies and van drivers.
The Transit Leader van is a diesel 2.2 litre 260 SWB 85ps van that is only available in white. While the Transit Connect Leader van is a diesel 1.8 litre 200 SWB 95ps van that is only available in white, red or blue, and does not offer the side loading door.
Ford has introduced several upgrades to the Transit Van and the Transit Minibus models in a bid to further improve its vans range.
The Ford Transit Van upgrade means that all van models with rear-wheel-drive from 100ps to 200ps will come with a six speed gearbox as standard from September. This change will also mean an improved miles per gallon and lower CO2 performance. The Transit Sport van has also had a slight upgrade and will come with a DAB radio as standard, making it the first medium sized van to boast this inclusion. DAB radios can be added to the Limited Transit Van model at a cost of £200.

The BBC has today revealed Ford’s plans to extend production of the Ford Transit van in the UK into 2012. Only last year, van maker Ford, cut its Southampton van workforce by half - to the tune of 1,100 staff. Ford used the economic recession as justification for its plans to move assembly of the Ford Transit van to turkey from 2011.
Sheffield-based Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions (BBUS) have acquired an incredible 700 Mercedes-Benz Sprinters through local van dealer Northside Truck & Van. The order consists primarily of the 313CDI 3.5 tonne vans but BBUS has also requested a number of Mercedes chassis cab vans to complete their van fleet.
BBUS has asked for all the Mercedes vans to be fitted with passenger airbags in addition to the standard driver airbags. The Mercedes vans will also be fitted with seat belt warning alarms for the van drivers. All of the 700 vans ordered comply with Euro 5 exhaust emissions.
Once again the Vansdirect office has been casting their eyes over the phenomenon that is the You Tube. And once again a gem of a van related video has been found starring the talents of Buster Keaton. Without researching the video fully, we can only conclude that it’s an advert for Ford’s first medium or long wheel base van - the underpinning of the now famous Ford Transit. Even if you’re not a fan of the Ford Transit van or Buster Keaton, it’s still worth watching this van video for the sheer delight of watching a lion drive a Ford van!
The Ford Transit is popular the world over. We’ve had 40 years of them but our appetite doesn’t seem to diminish. Whilst the van is the same the world over, the advertising of it is not. You’re probably (unless living outside of the UK) familiar with the “backbone of Britain” commercial. But this is somewhat dull in comparison to our foreign counterparts.
One of Vansdirect’s favourite vans reached an impressive milestone last month. In the otherwise quiet Sevel, Italy, the 2 millionth Ducato rolled off the Fiat production line with little fanfare. But “why?” Vansdirect asks. Why didn’t anyone give praise to this remarkable achievement?
The Ducato offers a cheap but uncompromising alternative to the traditionally popular Ford Transit and the expensive Mercedes Sprinter. It’s humble beginnings date back to 1981 with its popularity and success growing year-on-year. Indeed, Vansdirect sells so many Ducatos, we some times have to remind ourselves that it’s not a Ford or Merc!
Vansdirect has already brought you the history of the much beloved Ford Transit - the commercial vehicle that others perhaps aspire to be, and the van that even the Germans would use to carry their bratwurst! But, what truly make a nation sit up and take notice? What or who can make the dull interesting? Where do you turn when you want to push a vehicle to its limits? To the team at TopGear of course……..
