Van Registrations Tumble
September - Registrations Down 22.1%

Registrations Fall In September
Vansdirect recently reported on the SMMT’s assessment of falling car registrations during September 2008. Today, the same organisation published its assessment of the commercial vehicle market.
In short, registrations are down 19.2% for September but down a massive 22.1% in the case of vans only. These figures are hardly surprising, but given the apparent unwilling nature of the government to commit to any substantive rescue plans or to speculate on potential solutions, the figures do not make pleasant reading for the manufacturer or van retailer.
The worst hit van manufacturers, on a month-by-month comparison include Tata (-100%), Nissan (-63.6%), LDV (-61.9%) and Mitsubishi (-57.4%). However, even the traditionally strong van-brands have been hit with the likes of Ford (-15.1%), Volkswagen (-16.7%) and Mercedes (-23.7%) struggling in tough trading conditions.
When examining the year to date figures LDV and Nissan are again the notable losers experiencing a reduction in registrations of 35.18% and 31.54% respectively. Again, the stalwarts have been hit by the downturn with Ford (-2.69%), Vauxhall (-1.78%), Citroen (-10%) and Renault (-11.4%) experiencing YTD figures below expectations.

Commenting on the figures, Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of the SMMT said “We expect the van market will stay well below recent levels for some time [...] we expect a tough market for the next 12 months or more.”
